Box Design for  California Finest Medical Marijuana Cigarettes Design Plus Wrapper

Yep, this is exactly what it says it is – marijuana cigarettes. One of the joys of designing packaging for the medical marijuana industry is that looking cool, as in blow your mind cool, is highly valued by both producers and consumers. This means I get to push the aesthetic boundaries and let loose. But that doesn’t mean you can be sloppy. The same rules for great packaging and design still apply. So while the designs are visually dense, they still have a certain ease to them because the hierarchy of elements are clear and balanced, and the colors are appropriate and controlled.

But this all started with my client coming by my office with a box of sugar-free Hawaiian Punch Singles-To-Go. He said  “make this box, it fits our cigarettes perfectly, except it needs to work like a cigarette box.” So that’s what I did. Then I designed wrappers that would hold each of the five one gram marijuana cigarettes that come in each box. These wrappers, besides carrying the brand message, also doubled as a freshness barrier.

To enhance the premium look and feel I also designed an embossing dieline to give the boxes a great tactile sensation. This also made the boxes much harder to counterfeit which is a problem in almost any industry from allergy medicine and purses, to software and shoes.
