Storyboards for Google’s Android OS

It’s a popular myth that everyone was just sitting on their hands, completely clueless and complacent, until Apple came along and showed everyone how to make a smart phone. But the truth is a lot of people were thinking along the same lines and already developing the technologies that would launch the smart phone revolution in parallel with Apple’s iPhone development.

Back in November 2005, I was contacted by a new engineering department head at Google. Apparently the engineers were brainstorming ideas about how Google could be integrated into a cell phone. Little did I know at the time that Google had purchased Android Inc in August and had big ambitions in the mobile phone market.

The idea was to test market mobile application concepts with a live test group without investing the time in making working prototypes. So we created little comics, complete with speech bubbles, that would be shown to the test group to get their feedback.

At the time cell phones were small, and most had a flip top, so that’s how I drew them for the storyboards. I also thought that the ideas I were illustrating were purely speculative as they seemed quite futuristic. However, looking back on the storyboards now, they seem quaint and folksy compared to the multi-tasking powerhouses that smart phones have now become.

And now, ten years later, I own an HTC One running Android and I couldn’t be happier . It’s also kind of cool that I had a part in “developing” the Android OS, no matter how insignificant.

Below are the original boards as presented to the test groups.

What if you could just speak into a phone and it could understand what you were saying?

Whoah! How did he do that?!

But wait, here’s another futuristic smart phone concept circa 2005

What if you could send Google maps direction to your phone?

And then you could send that same map and directions to someone elses phone?

You’d be living in the future baby!

Ok, maybe just one more blast from the past.

Whoa, did she just send a cell phone picture to someone elses computer?

And now she’s showing her pics with someone else who’s sitting right next to here. No biggie.

Until she sends a copy straight to her friend’s phone! Did I just blow your mind or what?
